Estate & Trust Litigation Attorney
Shannon Mullins & Wright LLP is growing and actively seeking an experienced Estate & Trust and Litigation attorney who will serve as a team member of this expanding practice area. During this time of high demand and opportunity in our complex, fast-paced and varied estate and trust litigation practice, the ideal candidate will bring minimum of 5 years of direct Estate & Trust experience and Litigation experience to our expanding law firm.

This position will report directly to the Managing Partner while collaboratively working with our other partners, attorneys, paralegals and the rest of the SMW team. The position will entail working all aspects of legal cases from direct client interaction and communications through drafting independent motions, representing the firm as lead-chair in trials per case requirements and lead counsel in estate and trust matters.

As estate & trust and litigation attorney, you will ensure the efficient, successful litigation as well as client estate planning and administration needs are handled in accordance with Virginia Bar standards and the best practices of the firm. Responsibilities include:

  • Independently manage estate and trust administration.
  • Independently manage estate or trust litigation caseload as assigned.
  • Work closely with existing clients to support other practice area attorney’s cases and legal projects to ensure the firm is represented in a wide range of estate and trust litigation needs.
  • Regularly attend and assist in court appearances and depositions.
  • Consistently deliver timely communications and updates to clients on case progress and actions
  • Meet with new clients to assess, represent and complete the legal needs as a firm representative in good standing.
  • Coordinate and facilitate in all aspects of litigation through trial and appellate proceedings.
  • Prepare estate plans with Wills, Powers of Attorney and Advance Medical Directives.
  • Prepare trust-based plans with revocable trusts, pour over wills, powers of attorneys and Advance Medical Directives.
  • Coordinate, communicate with, and support staff to ensure project and case deadlines are met.
  • Ensure timely entry of time and billing details daily and in line with the firm best practices.
  • Work with Firm Administrator and the Managing Partner to support the goals of the firm and the partners.
  • Ensure all actions are in conformity with the expectation of the Virginia State Bar, including the highest professional standards in the legal community, and legal best practices.

Ideal Candidates will:

  • Current Virginia Bar Membership in good standing.
  • Have minimum 5 years litigation experience in trust and estate disputes.
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of estate planning.
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of trust laws and administration best practices.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills up skills.
  • Demonstrate professionalism with all team members.
  • Commit to the professional, integrity and loyalty that are keystones for the firm.
  • Have professional office experience using Microsoft Office Suite including Teams, Outlook, Word and Excel.

Preferred, but not required:

  • DC Bar Membership
  • Maryland Bar Membership
  • Clio software experience
  • Sharepoint software experience

  • Have minimum 2 years of lead chair litigation experience.
  • Demonstrate advanced understanding of civil court system.
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of commercial law.
  • Demonstrate strong legal process and local court requirement familiarity including trial and appellate court systems.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Have excellent organizational skills including capturing, detailing and follow up skills.
  • Demonstrate professionalism with all team members.
